Verneda "Edie" Jones, departed this world on March 28, 2025, at the cherished age of 97, at Hamilton Grove Communities. Born on May 14, 1927, in the small town of Monon, Indiana, Edie's journey was marked by resilience, love, and a zest for life that left an indelible impact on all who knew her.
Edie, a devoted daughter of Alfred and Frankie Willis, embraced her early education in the Mill Creek Schools, where she began to form the values that would guide her throughout her life. She nurtured her spiritual growth as a faithful member of the Mill Creek Baptist Church, where she served with great dedication as President of the Women’s Grace Circle, fostering community and connection among her peers. Her commitment to service extended beyond her church home; Edie volunteered at the Hamilton Grove Dining Center until 2017, reinforcing her belief in the power of community engagement. Her nurturing spirit was echoed in the various hobbies she pursued passionately. She delighted in ceramics, often sharing her creations with family and friends, crafting gifts filled with her love for the holidays. Alongside her husband, Harry Donald Jones, Edie cultivated a profound appreciation for gardening, the written word, and the warmth of family gatherings. Together, they forged a life rich in creativity and connection, creating many cherished memories.
Edie is survived by her beloved daughter, Judy Devereaux of Okeechobee, FL; sister, Helen Evans; grandchildren, Todd (Patty) Devereaux, Eric (Susan) Devereaux, Patty Prentice, and Michael Nybo, along with her great-grandchildren, Elizabeth Devereaux, Caitlin and Cheyanne Prentice.
Edie was preceded in death by her husband, Harry; her daughters, Sharon Ann Jones and Donna Mahler; sisters, Hansel Larson, Hannah Cooper; brothers, Robert, William, and Arnie Willis and sons-in-law, James Mahler and Robert Devereaux. Their memories together illuminate the path she has traveled, a testament to the bonds of love that withstand the test of time.
A visitation will be held at Haverstock Funeral Home, 602 Maple Ave, La Porte, IN, where friends and family can pay their respects on Monday, April 7th, 2025 from 5 pm until 7 pm and Tuesday April 8, 2025 from 10 am until service time at 11 am, with Deacon Dave Peery, officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Grove Cemetery, Mill Creek, IN.
Memorial donations may be made in Edie’s name to The Mill Creek Baptist Church, 8762 E 200 S., Mill Creek, IN 46365.
