Verna Johnson

Mrs. Verna M. Johnson, 73, of La Porte, Ind., died Tuesday, July 15, 2008, at Saint Anthony Hospital, Michigan City. She was born on Oct. 22, 1934, in Greenville, S.C., to the late Van Beck and the late Zadie Morris Beck. Mrs. Johnson was employed by American Home Foods for 15 years, working on the food production line. She was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church of LaPorte. She was also a member of V.F.W. Post 1130 Auxiliary of LaPorte. She loved fishing and spending time with her grandchildren. She was married to Charles T. Johnson for 51 years, who survives. Also surviving are two daughters, Brenda Gail Dale Kilgore of Michigan City, and Debra Lynn Johnson of La Porte; two sons, Ronald Byrd of North Carolina, Larry Pat Byrd of La Porte; ten grandchildren; one sister, Betty Siebenmark of Saint Joseph, Mich.; and three brothers, Al Beck of Hamlet, Ind., James Terry Beck of La Porte, and Charles Beck of Big Sandy, Tenn. She was preceded in death by her mother and father. Arrangements are being handled by Haverstock Funeral Home, Inc., 602 Maple Ave., La Porte, where the family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m., Sunday, July 20, 2008, and from 10 a.m. Monday, July 21, 2008, at Haverstock Funeral Home, until time of service. The funeral service will be Monday, July 21, 2008, at 11 a.m. at Haverstock Funeral Home, Inc., with Rev. Curtis Southwood officiating. Interment will be at Springville Cemetery, La Porte.
