Mr. Sterling E. Jantz, 82, of Fish Lake Walkerton, Indiana, died Wednesday May 6, 2009 at his home in Fish Lake. He was born August 24, 1926 in Chicago, Illinois, the son of Edmund Jantz and Lilly Mae Purpus Jantz. He has lived in the LaPorte area for 20 years coming from Chicago, Illinois. Sterling worked as a Police Officer for the Chicago Police Department for 35 years retiring in 1989. He was a veteran of the US Navy of World War II. He was a member of the Fish Lake American Legion Post #400, Walkerton Masonic Lodge, Orak Shrine of Michigan City, IN. and the Fraternal Order of Police. He enjoyed fishing, boating, cutting the grass and being outdoors. He loved spending time with his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. On September 1, 1951, in Chicago, IL, he married Alice M. Mountford who survives. He is also survived by his daughter Alyce Darin Hopping of Lexington, NC; two sons Steven Janice Jantz of Chicago, IL, Edmund Mary Beth Jantz of Chicago, IL; seven grandchildren, Christine A.J. Fenske, Michele Jantz, James Jantz, Denise Jantz, Julie John Gabrielson, Katie Jantz, Edmund Katie Jantz; two great grandchildren, Latham Gabrielson and Gracie Jantz. Sterling was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Jay Jantz. Arrangements are being handled by Haverstock Funeral Home, 602 Maple Ave., LaPorte, Ind. where the family will receive friends Saturday, May 09, 2009 from 12:00 pm to 2:00 pm. A memorial service will be held at Haverstock Funeral Home, Inc., Saturday May 9, 2009 at 2:00 PM with Rev. Dorothy Jones officiating. To send flowers or a memorial gift to the family of Sterling E.
