Roland Gropp

Roland "Rollie"Gropp September 24, 1921-April 25, 2019 Roland "Rollie" Gropp, 97, of LaPorte, IN, passed away Thursday, April 25, 2019 at his home in LaPorte, IN. He was born September 24, 1921 in LaPorte, Indiana, the son of Charles Gropp and Ella (Sass) Gropp. Roland was a WWII veteran who served in the Army-Air Force from 1942 - 1946. During that time he was an airplane maintenance technician and was qualified as an AAF air crew member and a carbine sharp-shooter. He became ranked as Corporal, and received the American Theater Ribbon, Asiatic-Pacific Theater Ribbon, a Good Conduct Medal, and a WWII Victory Medal. In his spare time, Roland enjoyed traveling to see his family in Texas, Colorado, and Ohio. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. On May 28, 1949, in La Porte, IN , he married Betty (VanSleet) Gropp who preceded in death. He is survived by his son, Jerry L. (Cindy) Gropp of Hudson, OH; two step-sons, Jack (Kathie) Runion of Valparaiso, IN, Ron W. (Helen) Krueger of Mesquite, TX; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren and also several nieces and nephews. Roland was preceded in death by both his parents, two brothers, Robert and Carl Gropp, and sister, Norma Ott. Arrangements are being entrusted to Haverstock Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 602 Maple Ave., La Porte, IN where the family will receive friends Monday, May 6, 2019, from 10:00 am - 11:00 am. A life celebration will be held at Haverstock Funeral Home, Inc., Monday May 6, 2019 at 11:00 am with Rev. Bill Barnes officiating. Interment will follow at the Patton Cemetery, LaPorte, IN.
