Otis Akins

Otis Lee Akins, Sr. 76 of LaPorte, Indiana passed away on Saturday, March 12, 2011 at LaPorte Hospital. Otis was born September 28, 1934 in Augusta, Arkansas to Reverend Clemon Calvin Akins, Sr. and Sirberbon Hawkins Akins. On April 5, 1954, in Arkansas, he married Ethel Lou Gillespie, she survives in LaPorte. Also surviving are his children; Jimmy Nova Gillespie of Aurora, CO, Frederick Douglas Jackie Akins of LaPorte, IN, Ronald Akins of Jacksonville, North Carolina, Sherman Akins of Dallas, TX, Kerrie Juanita Akins of LaPorte, IN, Otis Jr. Jackie Akins of LaPorte, IN, Dwight Akins of LaPorte, IN, and daughter Wanda Akins of LaPorte, IN. He has a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relatives. Otis was a retired truck driver from Gra-Bell Trucking. Otis had previously drove trucks for Jefferson Smurfit, Boise Cascade, Winbro Trucking and Wanatah Stone. Otis was a proud family man who had a passion to BBQ for his family and friends, was a caring husband, father, grandfather, brother, and true friend who will be dearly missed. Arrangements are being handled by Haverstock Funeral Home 602 Maple Avenue LaPorte, IN Visitation and viewing will be held from 2-4 and 6-8 on Friday, March 18, 2011 at the Haverstock Funeral Home and from 10:00 am, until time of service at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church. A funeral service celebrating his life will be held at 11:00 am, Saturday, March 19, 2011 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Pastor Dalrey L. Trotter, officiating. Interment will follow at the Pine Lake Cemetery, LaPorte, Indiana. Memorial contributions may be made to the Family of Otis L.
