Miss Nevada C. Henton, 99, of La Porte, died February 25, 2005, at Settlers House. Her brother, Charles Butch, preceded her in death in April, 2003. She is survived by his wife, June Stubblefield, niece, Cynthia, and nephew, Richard. Miss Henton was born in Westville on Nov. 28, 1905, to Cory and Grace Herrold Henton. At age 10, as documented in the LaPorte County Historical Society Museum, she and her pet goat lead a float promoting women?s rights in a Westville homecoming parade in 1915. Nevada graduated from Westville High School in 1923 and from the LaPorte Business College in 1925. She then began her secretarial career at the First National Bank of LaPorte. She worked for Russell, Burdsall and Ward Corporation of Chicago, for 27 year, and retired in 1970. According to a LaPorte Herald Argus story, she was "a champion among champions" in women?s tennis tournaments in LaPorte in the ?30s, having won several permanent trophies. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of LaPorte. Visitation will be Tuesday morning from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Haverstock Funeral Home, LaPorte with a memorial service at 12:00 Noon Tuesday. Burial will follow at the Westville Cemetery.
