Mrs. Basil F. Nellie M. Stoner Jones, died at 4:20 p.m. on Friday, June 20th, 2007 at the Health Center, Hamilton Communities, New Carlisle following a two-week illness. Nellie M. Stoner was born June 25, 1907 in Wills Township, near Rolling Prairie, to David Miles Stoner and Sarah Edith Short Stoner. On February 22, 1929 at the Stoner farm in Wills Township where she was born, Nellie married Basil Ford Jones, who died on May 31, 1960. They had three children, David Sherry Jones, Marcia Charles Porter, both of Rolling Prairie and the late Robert E. Patricia Jones of Chesterton. She also has seven grandchildren, Susan Jim Sims, Woodstock GA.; Bruce Jones, Woodbridge, VA. Timothy Julie Porter, Unionville, IN.; Dirk Phyllis Jones, LaPorte, IN.; Rebecca Jeff Slattman, Defiance, OH.; Jodi Keith Bannwart, LaCrosse, IN.; and Matthew Becky Porter, Noblesville, IN. Nellie has nine great-grandchildren, Micheal Becky Green, Jenny Andy Meyer, and Ashly Green; Sam & Kelley Jones; Sarah & Luke Porter; Gabriel and Quinnlyn Slattman and one great great granddaughter, Cameron Green. Nellie who retired on January 1, 1992 at the age of eighty-five, celebrated her 100th birthday on Tuesday June 25, at Hamilton Communities with an open house, hosted by her family, attended by more than 200 guests. Nellie Stoner graduated from Rolling Prairie High School in 1925 and worked as a secretary for the First National Institute of Violin in South Bend for four years, following her graduation from the South Bend College of Commerce. She later worked as a nurse?s aide at the former Holy Family and Community Hospitals in LaPorte, for nearly ten years. Nellie attended Indiana University, South Bend, for three years to earn an Indiana State Association of Medical Assistant?s Certificate. She was certified by the ISAMA as a Medical Assistant in 1964, shortly before her fifty eighth birthday. Nellie was office manager/medical assistant for Dr. Adolph Weinsock for 35 years, retired on January 1, 1992. Nellie and her husband, Basil, were instrumental in organizing Rolling Prairie Chapter Order of the Eastern Star #582, and served as the group?s first matron and patron in 1952. Nellie served as matron of the Chapter several times after her husband?s death. She is also a past Mother Advisor of Rolling Prairie Rainbow Assembly for Girls and served six terms as president of the LaPorte Business Girls Association. Nellie was elected State Treasurer for the Indiana Association of Medical Assistants for four years and chosen as a delegate to the 1965 IAMA National Convention in New York City. She also visited the White House in Washington, D.C., where she was greeted personally by Mrs. Richard Nixon, wife of the President of the United States. Nellie is a charter member of LaPorte Business and Professional Women, served in various offices for that organization, including president several times. She was chosen as a delegate to an exchange program through BPW and traveled south for a weeklong visit with Laurel, Miss., BPW members. Following more that forty years of service on the LaPorte County American Red Cross board Nellie was named as an honorary member. For more than forty years she volunteered as a Pink Lady for both Holy Family & Community Hospitals and LaPorte Hospital. Family and friends may call at the Haverstock Funeral Home, LaPorte, IN. from 4:00 to 8:00 PM Monday July 23, 2007 and from 9:00AM Tuesday until time of the service. A funeral service will be conducted Tuesday July 24, 2007 at 11:00 AM with the Rev. David Tripp, pastor of the Rolling Prairie United Methodist Church officiating. Cremation will follow with the burial of ashes, at a later date, at the Wills Township Baptist Cemetery. The family asks that memorial contributions in Nellie?s honor be given to the Rolling Prairie United Methodist Church ? being rebuilt after the church was destroyed by fire last year; to the American Red Cross; or to the American Cancer Society.
