Mrs. Phyllis Garwood

Phyllis Ann (Clayton) Garwood, 74, of La Porte, IN and Lake Placid, FL passed away unexpectedly on October 28th, 2011 at the Florida Hospital in Lake Placid, FL. Phyllis was born December 3rd, 1936 to Nathalee (Thomas) and Charles Clayton in Taylorville, Ill. She moved to La Porte in 1954 where she met and married James Garwood on February 7th 1957. Phyllis had retired from the family business, Garwood Orchard, but was still involved with the annual Apple Fest. She was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church in La Porte, IN and Memorial Methodist Church of Lake Placid, FL participating in the choir at both locations. At Bethany, Phyllis also participated in the Altar Guild. She was an avid music lover and was in attendance at the La Porte City Band, Michigan City Band and several bands in the Lake Placid area for over 55 years. Survivors include husband, James, children Brenda (Rich) Schultz, Linda (Craig) Saddler and Tom (Diane) Garwood. Grandchildren include Greg (Kim) Schultz, James Schultz, Christopher (Jessica) Saddler, Laura Saddler, Jake Garwood, Matthew Garwood and step-grandson Zachary Shott. She is preceded by her parents, sister Melva (Gene) Garwood and brother Kenneth (Dannette) Clayton. Visitation will be held at Haverstock Funeral Home on Wednesday, November 2nd from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM. Funeral services will be held at Bethany Lutheran Church on Thursday, November 3rd with viewing from 10:00 AM until the start of service at 11:00 AM. Graveside services will follow at Carmel Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Bethany Lutheran Church Choir Fund, La Porte, IN.
