Mrs. Leah Halter

Leah L Halter , 84, of Rolling Prairie, Indiana, died Monday, December 31, 2012 at Indiana University Health La Porte Hospital. She was born November 29, 1928 in Flint, Michigan, the daughter of Lloyd Stewart and Dora (Martinsen) Stewart. Since the age of two years old, Leah was raised by her aunt and uncle, Charles and Henrietta Whitmer, who have preceded her in death. Leah was a cook for 12 years at the New Prairie High School, retiring in 1984. Leah enjoyed spending time with her family, especially with her grandchildren.. On March 12, 1949, in LaPorte, IN, she married Clifford H. Halter who survives. She is also survived by her daughter - Carol Childress of Rolling Prairie, IN; son - Barry (Colleen) Halter of Rolling Prairie, IN; six grandchildren; fifteen great grandchildren; sister - Phyllis Schoeder of Edinburg, TX., and 2 cousins - Donna (Carl) Garwood of La Porte, IN, Henry (Betty) Whitmer of Wabash, IN, who where raised with Leah as sister and brother. Leah was preceded in death by her parents, uncle and aunt, Charles and Henrietta Whitmer, brother, Lloyd Stewart, Jr., and son-in-law, William Childress. Arrangements are being entrusted to Haverstock Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 602 Maple Ave., LaPorte, IN where the family will receive friends Friday, January 4, 2013 from 3:00 pm - 8:00 pm. A life celebration will be held at Dunes Baptist Church at 4468 US 20 Pines, IN., Saturday, January 5, 2013 at 10:00 am with Pastor Samuel Geckler officiating. Interment will follow at the Oak Grove Cemetery, Mill Creek, Indiana.
