Mrs. Elizabeth "Betty" Jane Smith, 91, of Charlotte, North Carolina, and formerly of Mill Creek, died peacefully on Wednesday, November 21, 2012, at her home in Charlotte, surrounded by loving family. She was born July 3, 1921, in New Jersey to Cecil C. Garvin and Clara S. Garvin. On June 20, 1942, she married Richard "Dick" P. Smith who died on November 28, 2007. Also preceding her in death were two brothers, John Garvin and Cecil Garvin. Surviving is one brother, Hugh (Shirley) Garvin, of Malibu, CA; four children, Steve (Linda) Smith of Noblesville, IN; Ellen McClure of Charlotte, NC; Rebecca Redman of Kew Gardens, NY; and Marilee (Dave) Mahler, of Minnetonka, MN; 12 grandchildren including Jessica (Clyde) Crass of LaPorte; Sarah (Martin) Ruppert, of Basel, Switzerland; Shawn, Bonnie and Evelyn McClure; Kevin, Thomas (Lora) and John Tague; Michael (Dara), Laura, Jacob (Denise) and Zach Mahler; and 8 great-grandchildren. Mrs. Smith and her husband, Dick, of 65 years, enjoyed traveling the world and had lived in many parts of the country. She was an avid decorator, gardener and bridge player. She always believed in leaving a place better than she found it. Arrangements are being handled by Haverstock Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 602 Maple Ave., LaPorte, IN. A grave side service and burial of ashes will be held at Oak Grove Cemetery, Mill Creek, IN, for family and friends, at 11:00 AM Saturday, December 29, 2012 with Rev. Evan Lash officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to Hillsdale College, 33 East College Street, Hillsdale MI 49242, or to the charity of donor's choice.
