Mr. James Allen Garwood, 81, of La Porte, Indiana, and Lake Placid, Florida passed away on Sunday, February 10, 2013, in the Sebring Florida Heart Medical Center. He was born January 27, 1932 in LaPorte, Indiana, the son of Carl A Garwood and Myrtle A. (Johnson) Garwood. On February 7, 1957, in LaPorte, IN, he married Phyllis Ann (Clayton) Garwood, who preceded him in death October 28, 2011. Jim was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church in LaPorte and Memorial Methodist Church of Lake Placid, Florida, participating in the choir at both locations and providing trumpet for Bethany Church. Jim retired from Garwood Orchard, but was always available when a piece of equipment needed his special touch. He was a graduate of Purdue University. Jim was a member of Farm Bureau and served as a state advocate. A long-time musician, Jim played for 65 years for both the LaPorte City Band and the Michigan City Municipal band. He was a charter member of the LaPorte Symphony and could often be found in the LaPorte Little Theatre pit orchestra. In Florida, Jim played in the Skylarks Dance Band and the Highland County Concert Band. Jim served in the Army from 1954 to 1956 as a Specialist 3rd Class in the European Theatre and is a member of the Harmon Grey Post #83 American Legion of LaPorte. He is survived by his children; Brenda (Rich) Schultz, Linda (Craig) Saddler and Tom (Diane) Garwood. Grandchildren include, Greg (Kim) Schultz, James Schultz, Christopher (Jessica) Saddler, Laura Saddler, Jake Garwood, Matthew Garwood and step-grandson, Zachary Shott; two sisters, Carol (Robert) Schroeder, Judith (Craig) Fecel and two brothers, Eugene Garwood and Carl E. (Donna) Garwood and their families. Arrangements are being entrusted to Haverstock Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 602 Maple Ave., La Porte, IN where the family will receive friends on Friday, February 15, 2013 from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm. Funeral services will be held at Bethany Lutheran Church with Rev. Dennis Meyer, officiating on Saturday, February 16th at 11:00 am and viewing from 10:00 am to the start of service at 11:00 am. A graveside service will follow at Carmel Cemetery. A Military Service will conducted by the LaPorte Honor Guard at the Carmel Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family request memorials be made to the James A. and Phyllis A. Garwood Memorial Music Scholarship Fund.
