Mr. Jack Decker

Mr. Jack Allan Decker, 79, of La Porte, Indiana, passed away peacefully on Monday, February 4, 2013 at Indiana University Health La Porte Hospital, after a brief illness. He was born December 28, 1933 in La Porte, Indiana, the son of Clarence Decker and Joyce (Hager) Decker. Jack helped his father in the family hardware business during his high school years. After graduation he proudly served in the United States Coast Guard as a boatswain's mate from 1953-1957. He was stationed mainly in Cape May, New Jersey. After returning to LaPorte, he worked at Kingsley Furniture for thirteen years. Jack and his brother-in-law, Lawrence Johnson, started their business, Industrial Power Wash Service, in 1972. Jack continued that business until his retirement in 2011. Jack was well known for his quick wit and keen sense of humor, he had a real passion for building model airplanes and he enjoyed his early morning coffee meetings with his good friend, Dick Pietraszewski. Jack was an avid Cubs, Colts and Notre Dame fan. Jack was an associate member of LaPorte Hospital Auxiliary, a member of American Legion Post #83 and LaPorte Yacht Club. He was married on April 21, 1961 in LaPorte, Indiana to Nancy (Hupp) Decker, who preceded him on November 30, 1988. Jack was remarried to his wife Marilyn on August 19, 2006 in LaPorte, IN, who survives. Jack is also survived by his sister, Lois Craft of Crawfordsville, IN; nieces, Julie (Johnson) Becknell of LaPorte, IN, Lora Craft Whiles of Crawfordsville, IN, Cecily (Charles) Dresser of Crawfordsville, IN, and Linda Hupp of Seattle, Washington; nephews, Dean (Diane) Craft of Vero Beach, Florida and William Andrew (Julie) Hupp, Jr. of Mundelien, IL. Also surviving are his step-daughters, Deborah (Adrian) Mazar of LaGrange, IL, Donna (David) Homann of LaPorte, IN, Daun (Ron) Caddo of LaPorte, IN, Darlene Pavey of LaPorte, IN, and Deidre (Lawrence) Notto of Broad Run, VA; step-grandchildren, Danielle Mazar, Benjamin and Emily Homann, Tracy and Madison Pavey, Lawrence and Lauren Notto, and step-great grandson, Jacob Pavey. Jack was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Nancy Decker, two sisters, Rena Decker and Dorothy Decker Johnson, and one brother, Clarence Decker, Jr. Arrangements are being entrusted to Haverstock Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 602 Maple Ave., LaPorte, IN. The family will receive friends Friday, February 8, 2013 from 9:00 am - 11:00 am at the First United Methodist Church of LaPorte. A life celebration will be held at the First United Methodist Church, Friday February 8, 2013 at 11:00 am with Rev. Evan Lash officiating. Interment will follow at the Door Village Cemetery, LaPorte, Indiana. A military service will be conducted by the LaPorte V.F.W. American Legion Honor Guard at the cemetery.
