Mr. Eric Sharp

Mr. Eric D. Sharp, 39, of Indianapolis, Indiana, died Friday November 2, 2012 at IU Health Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis, IN. He was born June 2, 1973 in La Porte, Indiana, the son of Thomas Sharp and Carole (Fisher) Sharp. From 1992-1995, Eric performed with the Cavalier Drum and Bugle Corp. earning International Championships in 1992 and 1995. He then became an instructor for Bluecoats Drum and Bugle Corp. of Canton, Ohio from 1996-1997. Eric graduated with his bachelor's degree in English from IUPUI and went on to earn his MPA in Sustainable Management from Presidio Graduate School of San Francisco, California. IUPUI has recently established an endowment for a creative writing award in Eric's name. It will be called Eric Sharp Gateway Award for writers enrolled in any introductory courses. Quoting his former professor, "Eric was such a mentor to younger students, and his intelligence really lit up a room." He was a volunteer coordinator for Global Gifts, a volunteer supported fair trade organization. He was also a member of the Simon Youth Foundation, an organization that exists to help youth - who are at risk of dropping out of high school - graduate, develop life skills, and pursue post-secondary education and career paths. From 2000-2012 Eric served on the Human Rights Campaign Board of Directors in both Las Vegas, Nevada and Indianapolis, Indiana. He is survived by his parents, Thomas and Carole Sharp of Mill Creek, IN.; brother, Douglas (Jennifer) Sharp of Charlotte, NC, sister - Lisa Sharp of La Porte, IN., brother Chris (Shelly) Sharp of New Carlisle, IN; three nieces - Emily, Ally, and Avery Sharp. Eric was preceded in death by his grandparents. Arrangements are being handled by Haverstock Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 602 Maple Ave., La Porte, IN where the family will receive friends Thursday, November 8, 2012 from 4:00 pm - 8:00 pm CST & Friday, November 9, 2012 from 9:00 am, until time of service. A life celebration will be held at Haverstock Funeral Home, Inc., Friday November 9, 2012 at 11:00 am CST with Father Ian Williams officiating.
