Mr. Elwood Scharf

Elwood J. Scharf, 92, of La Porte, Indiana, died Wednesday, February 15, 2012 at La Porte Hospital. He was born December 14, 1919 in La Porte, Indiana, the son of George Fred Scharf and Mary Louise Christine (Seidler) Scharf. He worked as a teller at Andrew's Bank from 1938 to 1942. Elwood worked at the Kingsbury Ordnance Plant in the fiscal department before joining the Army in World War II, serving from 1942 to 1945, attaining the rank of Tech Sergeant serving under the XXI Corp Seventh Army in France and Germany. He served as Deputy Auditor for La Porte County from 1947 to 1951. Elwood was a field auditor for Indiana State Board of Accounts for 26 years. He was employed by the O'Reair Swanson Insurance and Tillinghast Insurance Agency, both in full-time and part-time capacity for 58 years beginning in 1951. He was a member lifelong member of the St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church of La Porte. Elwood was also a member of the Phi Delta Kappa Fraternity in La Porte for over 74 years; The Veterans of Foreign Wars; and the American Legion Post #83. On May 9, 1943, in La Porte, IN, he married Betty "Ann" (Meister) Scharf who survives in LaPorte, IN. He is also survived by his son - Neil A. (Barbara) Scharf of Marietta, GA; 2 grandsons - Stephen C. Scharf of LA, Scott E. Scharf of Marietta, GA; 2 great-grandchildren - Charley Scharf, and Rosie Scharf and many nieces and nephews. Elwood was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Melvin Scharf and one sister, Betty M. Ringla. Arrangements are being handled by Haverstock Funeral Home, 602 Maple Ave., La Porte, Ind. where the family will receive friends on Friday, February 17, 2012 from 9:00 am until time of service. A Life Celebration will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, February 17, 2012 at Haverstock Funeral Home with Rev. Ronald Brauer officiating. A Graveside Military Service will be conducted by the La Porte Honor Guard. Interment will follow at the St. John's Lutheran Cemetery.
