Mr. Benedict Klapkowski

Mr. Benedict J. Klapkowski , 88, of La Porte, Indiana, died Tuesday October 16, 2012 at his home. He was born February 24, 1924 in Hammond, Indiana, the son of Anthony Klapkowski and Mary Anna Klapkowski. After working at Standard Oil of Indiana for several years he opened the Cozy Tavern in Hammond Indiana. There he served the local business employees homemade soups and sandwiches for 26 years. He never tired of cooking. After he sold the tavern he moved to LaPorte, Indiana and continued to work part time as a small engine repair man at the Beachwood Golf Course. For several years, his love for cooking found a new avenue by cooking for church events in town. At his home he also enjoyed farming, driving his tractor, cooking and canning his surplus. He was a longtime member of the American Legion and the Knights of Columbus. Ben was a loving father and loyal friend; he will live on in the hearts of many. On June 20, 1944, in Hammond, IN, he married Alice B. (Demiduk) Klapkowski who preceded him in death April 23, 1995. He is survived by his 3 daughters - Kathleen (Bob) Dalbey of Mount Horeb, WI, Chris Rzonca of Hammond, IN, Marilee (Ralph) Shore of La Porte, IN; seven grandchildren - Greg Dalbey, Brian Rzonca, Raymond Rzonca, David Shore, Michael Shore, Alisa Shore, Heather Shore, and six great grandchildren. Benedict was preceded in death by his parents, wife, two brothers, Joseph, Alfred, and one sister, Josephine. Arrangements are being handled by Haverstock Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 602 Maple Ave., LaPorte, IN. A funeral mass will be held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Saturday October 20, 2012 at 11:00 am with Father Ian Williams officiating. Burial of ashes will be held on Tuesday, October 23, 2012 at 12:30 pm at the Patton Cemetery, LaPorte, Indiana with a graveside military service being conducted by the LaPorte Honor Guard.
