Mrs. May L. "Nicholson" Zona, 99, of LaPorte, Indiana, died Monday July 20, 2009 at Golden Living-Fountainview Terrace Nursing Home in LaPorte, IN. She was born October 4, 1909 in La Porte, Indiana, the daughter of Charles E. Miller and Olga Schmidt Miller. May was a 1927 alumni of Westville High School and a graduate of the Kalamazoo, Mich. Teacher's College. She worked as a teacher for the LaPorte Community School Corp for thirty-five years at Handley School, teaching second graders, retiring in 1976. She was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Otis, IN., St. Paul's Ladies Aide, Audubon Society, LaPorte Co. Retired Teachers, Terre-Verde Garden Club and Delta Kappa Gamma. She was an avid nature lover and photographer. When May taught second graders in school, she often held nature field trips at her home. On June 30, 1945, in Otis, Indiana, she married Wendall W. Nicholson who preceded her in death and then on June 10, 1979 in Otis, Indiana to Paul C. Zona, Sr., who preceded her in death, October 13, 1999. She is survived by her nieces, Carrie Dan "Miller" McKibben of La Porte, IN, Sue Loren "Long" Marley of Carmel, IN; nephews, David Jackie Miller of La Porte, IN, Jon Long of LaPorte, IN. and Marc Miller of LaPorte, IN; several great-nieces and one great-nephew. May was preceded in death by her parents, first husband, Wendall W. Nicholson; second husband, Paul C. Zona Sr.; one son; one brother, Jonhenry Miller and one sister, Ruth C. Long. Arrangements are being handled by Haverstock Funeral Home, 602 Maple Ave., LaPorte, Ind. The family will receive friends Friday, July 24, 2009 from 4:00 pm - 8:00 pm at the Haverstock Funeral Home & at the St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Otis, Ind. on Saturday, July 25, 2009 from 9:30 am, until time of the service. Services will be held at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Otis, Ind. on Saturday July 25, 2009 at 10:00 AM. Interment will follow at the Pinhook Cemetery, LaPorte, Indiana.
