Mrs. Mary E. Miller, 70, of La Porte, Indiana, died Tuesday October 20, 2009 at La Porte Hospital. She was born May 4, 1939 in Sullivan County, Indiana, the daughter of Byron Close and Eula Salesman Close. Mary was a homemaker. She was a member of Salvation Army of LaPorte, Ladies Home League, and League of Mercy. Mary enjoyed knitting, crocheting and spending time with her family and friends. On September 14, 1957, in Hymera, IN, she married James A. Miller, Sr. who preceded her in death January 6, 1986. Her companion, Earl Jones, preceded her in death on November 25, 2006. She is survived by her two sons, Ernest Amy Miller of Bristol, IN, James Casey Miller, Jr. of Elkhart, IN; three daughters, Deborah Miller of Elkhart, IN, Kathleen Miller of LaPorte, IN, Anna Terry Reavis of Elkhart, IN; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; one sister, Edith Stephens of Linton, IN; foster mother, Eva Wheat of Shelburn, IN.; two foster sisters, Virginia Lucas of Shelburn, IN, Winona Walters of Terre Haute, IN and Bryce Jones, who Mary helped raise. Mary was preceded in death by her parents; foster father, Claude Wheat; husband, James A. Miller, Sr.; companion, Earl Jones, Sr., grandparents, three sisters, one brother. Arrangements are being handled by Haverstock Funeral Home, 602 Maple Ave., LaPorte, Ind. A Graveside Service will be held at Pine Lake Cemetery, Friday October 23, 2009 at 11:30 AM with Captain Tim Farquharson officiating. Interment will follow.
