Keith Powell

Mr. Keith R. Powell, 65, of 18202 Hampton Ct., Fountain Valley, Calif., and formerly of LaPorte, died Wednesday, June 2, 2004, at 10:17 a.m. LaPorte County time at Centinela Hospital, Englewood, Calif. He was born May 17, 1939, in La-Porte to Eugene and Lillian Zarr Powell. Mr. Powell had been a teacher with the Englewood Unified School District for 10 years. He had been superintendent of New Prairie United School Corporation from 1977 to 1988. He attended LaPorte schools, and received his bachelor?s degree in education from Indiana University and master?s degree from the University of Wisconsin. He received special-education and severely handicapped instruction and CLAD cross-cultural language, certification, and academic development certificate from Chapman University and an educational doctorate from Ball State University. Surviving are his wife, Nora; his mother, of South Bend; one daughter, Angela of San Diego; two sons, Marty of Kingston, Jamaica, and Neal of Bloomington, Ind.; seven grandchildren; and one brother, Philip of Little Rock, Ark. Preceding him in death was his father. A graveside service will be Friday at 10 a.m. at Pine Lake Cemetery, LaPorte, with Rev. Ted Nordquist officiating. There will be no visitation.
