John Helmut Winter, 61, of La Porte, Indiana, passed away Friday November 24, 2023 at Northwest Health-La Porte.

He was born April 19, 1962 in Gary, Indiana, the son of Hans Winter and Irmgard (Baer) Winter.

John moved to the area in the 1970's from Gary, IN. He was a former member of Bethany Lutheran Church, La Porte. John owned J&J Painting and Remodeling, where he started as a painter and grew into building houses.  He was an avid snow skier who also loved to take vacations yearly, switching between Florida, Tennessee and Wisconsin. John had two Golden Retrievers who he loved, Heidi, who passed away, and Biscuit.

He is survived by his mother, Irmgard of La Porte, IN; three daughters, Melissa (James) Kist of Rolling Prairie, IN, Britne Winter of La Porte, IN, Bree Winter of La Porte, IN; three grandchildren, Peyton Kist, Austin Kist, Benjamin Kish; best friend, Rick Hickman of La Porte, IN.

John was preceded in death by his father, Hans, and his sister, Herta Gee.

Arrangements are being entrusted to Haverstock Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 602 Maple Ave., La Porte, IN where the family will receive friends for a visitation on Thursday, December 7 from 10:00 - 12:00 and a Celebration of John's Life service at noon.  Interment will follow at the Door Village Cemetery, LaPorte, Indiana.
