Mr. John Hewitt, Jr., 78, of LaPorte, Indiana, died Friday October 9, 2009 at Golden Living Center Fountainview in LaPorte, IN. He was born June 3, 1931 in LaPorte, Indiana, the son of John F. Hewitt and Edith Culp Hewitt. John worked as a sales manager for Voegler's Distributors, retiring after thirty years of service; he also worked at United Beverage of South Bend and was co-owner of the Avenue Bar with his wife, Shirley. He was a Veteran of the US Army during the Korean War, Past Commander of LaPorte American Legion Post #83 and member of the Honor Guard, Teamsters Local #298 Retiree's Club, Past LaPorte Director and past vice president of the LaPorte, Porter and Starke Co. Tavern Association, Past President of LaPorte Old Timer's Baseball Association, Past President of the Michiana Antique Auto Club, Loyal Order of Moose Lodge #492, Indiana Sheriff's Association, A.A.R.P., lifetime member of the Heart to Heart Club, American Heart Association of Indiana, charter member of Anheuser-Busch Collector's Club. On October 2, 1954, in LaPorte, IN, he married Shirley Ohlis, who survives. He is also survived by his son; Wayne Janet Hewitt of Santa Barbara, CA.; daughter, Diana John Quinn of LaPorte, IN; three grandchildren; Mathew Hewitt of Santa Barbara, CA, Robert Hewitt of Santa Barbara, CA, Joey Quinn of LaPorte, IN.; three sisters, Virginia Kessler of Kentucky, Doris Ivey of LaPorte, IN, Shirley Rameier of Arizona. John was preceded in death by his parents, two sons, Roger Hewitt, Kevin Hewitt, two sisters, Barbara Hough, Catherine Hewitt and three brothers, William Hewitt, Charles Hewitt, and Robert Hewitt. Arrangements are being handled by Haverstock Funeral Home, 602 Maple Ave., LaPorte, Ind. where the family will receive friends on Monday, October 12, 2009 from 2:00 pm to 8:00 pm and from 9:00 am Tuesday, October, 13, 2009, until time of service. Services will be held on Tuesday, October 13, 2009 at 10:30 am at the Haverstock Funeral Home with Rev. Ransom Ebersole, officiating. Interment will follow at the Patton Cemetery, LaPorte, Indiana. Memorial contributions may be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation International 120 Wall St. New York, New York 10005-4001.
