Joan Gierke

Mrs. Joan Marie Gierke, age 68, of Rolling Prairie, Ind., died 8:05 AM Monday, March 3, 2008, at her residence in Rolling Prairie, Ind. She was born April 1, 1939 in Brookline, MA. to the late John Coombs and the late Virginia Duest Coombs. Mrs. Gierke Graduated from Medfield High School in Medfield, MA in 1957, she attended Hanover College and PNC receiving her nursing degree. She worked at the LaPorte Hospital and was a nurse at "I" Street Clinic for 35 years. She had a love of sewing, an avid swimmer, hiker, bike rider, and skier, anything to do with the outdoors. Animals were a big part of her life, and she loved taking care of people. She was married in LaPorte Indiana to Leo Bernard Ament Jr. who survives. She remarried in Rolling Prairie, IN. to Albert Gierke Jr. who preceded in death Sept. 16, 1992. She is survived by her Daughter, Mrs. Johnna Jim Klute of La Porte, Ind.; Step-daughter Mrs. Shari Deutscher of Rolling Prairie, Ind.; Son, Mr. Brian Angela Ament of Rolling Prairie, Ind.; Two Step-son Mr. Steve Becky Gierke of Valparaiso, Ind., Mr. Scott Cindy Gierke of Brandon, Fla.; One Sister, Janice Coombs of Rolling Prairie, Ind.; and Nine grandchildren. Arrangements are being handled by Haverstock Funeral Home, Inc., 602 Maple Ave., LaPorte, Ind., where the family will receive friends from 2:00 PM to 8:00 PM Friday, March 7, 2008 and 9:00 AM Saturday until time of the service. Funeral service will be at Haverstock Funeral Home, Inc. at 11:00 AM Saturday, March 8, 2008, Rev. Dan McDonald officiating. Interment will be at Rolling Prairie Cemetery in Rolling Prairie, Ind.
