James A. Mercer, Jr. March 28, 1941-February 21, 2014 Mr. James Mercer, 72, of La Porte, Indiana, died Friday February 21, 2014 at IU Health Arnett Hospital in Lafayette, IN. He was born March 28, 1941 in Mound City, Illinois, the son of James A. Mercer and Lorraine C. (Smith) Mercer. James worked as a counselor for the State of Indiana. He was a member of Fish Lake American Legion Post #400 and was a veteran of the US Army during peacetime. James enjoyed collecting coins and stamps. He is survived by his 2 sons - Dennis Mercer of FL, Darin Mercer of Westville, IN; two grandchildren - Whitney and Taylor Mercer, and two step-grandchildren - Jeff and Ashley Young; brother - Robert Mercer of Walkerton, IN; sister - Debbie Lowery of Port Orchard, WA; and significant other - Patricia Best of La Porte, IN. James was preceded in death by his parents and son, Gregory Mercer. Arrangements are being entrusted to Haverstock Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 602 Maple Ave., La Porte, IN where the family will receive friends Wednesday, February 26, 2014 from 10:00 am, until time of service. A life celebration will be held at Haverstock Funeral Home, Inc., Wednesday, February 26, 2014 at 12:00 pm with Rev. Dan McDonald officiating. Interment will follow at the Patton Cemetery, LaPorte, Indiana. Memorial contributions may be made to the Make a Wish Foundation of LaPorte .
