James L. Hickman 1936-2017 Mr. James L. Hickman, 81 of LaPorte, Indiana went to be with the Lord on July 13, 2017. He was born in LaPorte to Fredrick and Frieda (Ploehn) Hickman in March 1936. Jim was a life-long resident of LaPorte and happily retired after working for various companies as a draftsman and engineer. He had a love for life and the outdoors especially fishing. In the spring, Jim could be found fishing for perch on Lake Michigan and ice fishing on Stone Lake in the winter. He was also an infamous do-it-yourselfer and tackled small and big projects alike with passion. He served his country in the National Guard and his Lord in various capacities - most recently, he supported the worship service as a member of the First United Methodist Church band. He was a devoted member and Trustee of the First United Methodist Church. On April 7, Jim married Susan Wingard who survives. They recently celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary. Also surviving are his children: Mary (Tim) Ford of Knox, IN; William (Peggy) Knoll of Mustang, OK; Peggy Knoll of Michigan City, IN; Brenda (Bruce) Zirzow of LaPorte, IN; and Steven (Tammi) Hickman of New Whiteland, IN. as well as his brother, Richard "Butch" Hickman of Kingsbury, IN. He was blessed with ten grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death are his parents, brother Ronald Hickman; and sister-in-law Jo Hickman. Haverstock Funeral Home and Cremation Services, LaPorte is handling the arrangements,where the family will receive friends, Monday, July 17, 2017 from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm, and at the First United Methodist Church on Tuesday, July 18, 2017 from 9:30 am to 10:30 am. A Life Celebration will be held at the First United Methodist Church on Tuesday, July 18, 2017 at 10: 30 am, with Rev. Robert Vale and Pastor Larry Owens, officiating. Burial of Ashes will be held at the Pine Lake Cemetery at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to First United Methodist Church, 1225 Michigan Ave, LaPorte, IN 46350.
