James Floyd Bevins Mill Creek , IN James Floyd Bevins age 78, peacefully passed away on Thursday, January 28, 2016 surrounded by his loving family. He is survived by his devoted wife of 57 years, Nancy (nee Fredregill) Bevins; children, Julie (Clay) Lanham, Jenny (fiance Rick Boklund) Scroggins, JoDe (Ron) Ballas and Tim (Janice) Bevins; grandchildren, Emily (Josh) Ruttledge, Lauren (Michael) Toth, Mike Lanham, Wesley (Ashley) Bevins, Tyler (Katelyn) Scroggins, Sarah (Morgen) Roelke and Ben Bevins; great grandchildren, Parker and Nathan Toth, Graham Ballas and Bentley Scroggins; siblings, Lois (Chuck) Endris, Darlene (Everett) Endris, Ernest Bevins and Gene (Jeanie) Bevins; many nieces, nephews and dear friends. Preceded in death by his parents, Garfield and Retha (nee Fields) Bevins and son in law, Jerry W. Scroggins Jr. Jim was born in Lynn Garden, TN and moved to Cedar Lake, IN when he was 10 years old. He was a 1956 graduate of Lowell High School where as a senior, he received the All Sports award; and he earned a football scholarship to Valparaiso University graduating with degrees in civil engineering and land surveying in 1962. He retired from INDOT and was an ASCE member. Jim was involved with the Lincoln Hwy Association and was named the LaPorte 2013 Historian of the Year for his creation of the LaPorte LHA kiosk located at the train station depot. He loved to travel and was known as a 'rock hound' collecting geodes with his grandchildren. Jim was an avid Indianapolis 500 fan. He supported all his grandchildren's interests and supported his 'Slicers' as a season ticket holder. Jim lived his life for his family. He was a Christian and everything that he accomplished was with great honesty and integrity. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather and will truly be missed by all whose lives he touched. Funeral Services will be held on Monday, February 1, 2016 at 11:00 AM (CST) at Haverstock Funeral Home 602 Maple Avenue LaPorte, IN with Pastor Brian White officiating.Cremation to follow. Family and friends are invited to meet with his family on Sunday, January 31, 2016 from 2:00-6:00 PM (CST) and on Monday morning from 10:00 AM (CST) until time of service at the funeral home.
