Helen L. Smith August 20, 1921-May 25, 2016 Helen L. Smith age 94, went to be with her Lord on Wednesday, May 25, 2016. She is survived by her daughters, Landa (Roland) Hamilton and Carol (late David) Jelke; grandchildren, Todd (Julie) Hamilton, Bret (Beth) Jelke, and Ryan (Erin) Jelke; great grandchildren, Nicholas, Brett, Matthew and Ashley Hamilton, Dalainy Jelke and sister, Betty Scharf. Preceded in death by her father, Carl Hahn and mother and stepfather, Ella and Fred Meister; sister, Alvine Young; brother, Landon Hahn and granddaughter, Carrie Lynn Hamilton and son-in-law, David Jelke. Helen was a 1939 graduate of LaPorte High School. On August 31, 1940 in LaPorte, IN, she married Roy V. Smith who preceded her in death. She was a longtime member of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Altar Guild, the Circle 7 and the Church Thrift Shop. She enjoyed volunteering at LaPorte Hospital, being a member of the Beechwood Ladies 18 Hole Golf Club and played on numerous bowling leagues and played Bridge, she was also a lifetime Chicago Cubs Fan. Helen was a loving daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, she will truly be missed by all whose lives she touched. Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, June 1, 2016 at 11:00 AM at St. John's Lutheran Church 111 Kingsbury Avenue LaPorte, IN with Rev. Ronald A. Brauer officiating. Interment to follow at Oak Grove Cemetery, Mill Creek, IN. Friends are invited to meet with the family on Wednesday morning from 9:00 AM until time of funeral service at the church.
