Helen Schmitz

Mrs. Helen M. Schmitz, 90, of La Porte, Indiana, died Monday March 29, 2010 at La Porte Hospital. She was born June 5, 1919 in La Porte, Indiana, the daughter of Carl Leeker and Ida Griewank Leeker and has lived in the La Porte area all of her life. Helen worked as a homemaker. She was a member of St. John Lutheran Church, Circle 7 of the church and was a former Scipio Township Trustee. On June 17, 1939, in La Porte, Indiana, she married Edward R. Schmitz who preceded her in death on February 22, 2002. She is survived by her daughter Ruth Ann Kenneth Baker of Ft. Meyers, FL; son James Elaine Schmitz of La Porte, IN; three grandchildren Karen Baker, Mark Baker, Diane Kenneth Freeland and seven great grandchildren. Helen was preceded in death by her parents, sister, Mary Krause and brother Richard Leeker. Arrangements are being handled by Haverstock Funeral Home, 602 Maple Ave., La Porte, Ind. where the family will receive friends Wednesday, March 31, 2010 4:00 pm - 7:00 pm & Thursday, April 01, 2010 9:00 am until time of the service. Services will be held at Haverstock Funeral Home, Inc., Thursday April 1, 2010 at 10:00 AM with Rev. Ronald A. Brauer officiating. Interment will follow at the Swan Lake Memorial Gardens, Michigan City, Indiana.
