Helen Mildred (Wawok) Macher, 91, of La Porte, Indiana, passed away Thursday, August 8, 2024, at home with her loving family by her side.
She was born November 14, 1932 in La Porte, Indiana, the daughter of Stefan Wawok and Rozalia (Minzik) Wawok.
A lifelong resident of the area, Helen was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church where she was, baptized, confirmed, and attended school until the 8th grade. She graduated from La Porte High School in 1951. Helen worked for Indiana Molding, La Porte Plastics and Aero Metals, where she retired in 1997. On October 23, 1965 in, Chesterton, Indiana, Helen married the love of her life, Kurt Macher, who preceded her in death, December 25, 2002. Helen's legacy extended beyond her career and marriage. She was one of the oldest active members of the PNA, La Porte, where she held various roles and was dedicated to the organization, serving as former Ladies Vice President, auditor of books, a recording secretary, secretary for the PNA Conservation Club, delegate to the PNA Council and even cooked in the PNA kitchen, where everyone raved about her polish dinners, especially her sauerkraut and sausage. She was also a former member of the La Porte Moose Club and the Falcons. An avid bowler, on November 11, 2006, she was inducted into the La Porte Women's Bowling Hall of Fame. Helen had a green thumb and took pleasure tending to her flowers and vegetables. She enjoyed collecting teapots and had a beautiful Christmas village, which she displayed each year. Above all else, Helen loved spending time with her family, taking trips with her daughters or hosting them for large gatherings at holidays and birthdays. She was loved by everyone and was one of a kind. She will truly be missed by all.
Helen is survived by her children, Kenneth (Dorreen) Wawok of La Porte, Rosemarie Emerick of La Porte, Cynthia (James) Hycner of Michigan City, James Macher of La Porte, Robert (Chris Kirk) Macher of La Porte,
William (Angie) Macher of La Porte; Nancy (Anthony) Basinger of La Porte; step-daughter, Debra (Victor) Kuspa of South Bend; sister, Sophie Zook of La Porte; two brothers, Casimir (Jane) Wawok of Fishers,
Stanley Wawok of TX; two sisters-in-law, Lillian Wawok of Chesterton, Hilda Duis of CO; eleven grandchildren, Drew (Carla) Renz of Kingsford Heights, Brent (Emily Childers) Renz of Trail Creek, Kayla (Shawn) Miller of La Porte, Heather (Kyle) Mummert of Muncie, Hannah (Charles) Gerard of Logansport, Ryan (Alexandria) Basinger of La Porte, Brenna (Cody) Ransburg of Howe, Brad Basinger of South Bend, Peggy Emerick of La Porte, Kenneth (Carol) Emerick of Pewaukee, WI, Paige Wawok of Valparaiso; 28 great-grandchildren with 1 on the way and a host of nephews, nieces and cousins.
Along with her husband of 37 years, Helen was preceded in death by her parents; step-son, Dennis Kurt Macher; son-in-law, Bradley A Emerick; grandsons, Brian B Emerick, Nicholas A Wawok; siblings, Joseph, Edward, Walter, Emanual, Jeanie and Irene Wawok and brother-in-law, John Duis.
Arrangements are being entrusted to Haverstock Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 602 Maple Ave., La Porte, IN where the family will receive friends for a visitation on Tuesday, August 13, 2024 from 10 a.m. until service time at 12 (noon) with Deacon Frank Zolvinski, Holy Family Parish, officiating. Interment will follow at the Pine Lake Cemetery, LaPorte, Indiana.
