Harriet Kathryn Buchanan, 101, of Niles, Michigan, passed away Tuesday, February 25, 2025 at Brickyard Care Center Mishawaka.

She was born January 8, 1924 in Laporte, Indiana, the daughter of Roy Zellers and Anna Marie (Schindler) Zellers.

As the owner of Mode O'Day in Niles, Michigan, Harriet applied her keen sense of style and entrepreneurship with grace and vitality. Her talents extended beyond the business realm, as she lovingly assisted her husband in selling springs for repair, demonstrating her unwavering commitment to supporting her family’s endeavors. On October 14, 1942 Harriet married the love of her life, Earl E. Buchanan, who preceded her in death March 26, 1995. Harriet was a devoted charter member of the South Bend Area Genealogical Society (SBAGS). Her passion for gardening was evident not only in her vibrant garden but also in her enjoyment of growing flowers and vegetables. An avid genealogist, Harriet dedicated time to tracing her family roots back to Germany, France, and Switzerland, delving into the rich history of her ancestors who emigrated in the early 1700s. This passion for her heritage enriched her understanding of family and her identity, which she shared with those close to her. Known for her appreciation of antiques, Harriet found joy in collecting and cherishing items that told a story of the past. She also loved expressing her creativity through needlework and art, showcasing her talents more than just in her business but in her personal life as well. She was a devoted mother, committed to creating a warm and inviting atmosphere for her family. Her culinary skills shone brightly as she entertained family and friends, serving dishes that were prepared with love, accompanied by thoughtful decorations that made her home a haven for all. Harriet Kathryn Buchanan will always be remembered for her enthusiasm, kindness, and the positive impact she made throughout her life. Her legacy will continue to inspire those who had the privilege to know her.

She is survived by her sister, Patricia Fisher, grandchildren, Sherrie, Ara, Brett; 7 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Along with her husband of 53 years, Harriet was preceded in death by her parents, son, David Buchanan; four brothers, Guy Zellers, Warren Zellers, William Zellers, Roy Zellers, and two sisters, Jean Palmer, Beverly Swanson. 

Arrangements are being entrusted to Haverstock Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 602 Maple Ave., La Porte, IN where the family will receive friends for a visitation Saturday, March 1, 2025 from 10 a.m. until service time at 12 (noon) with Deacon Bob Wellinski from the St. Peter Catholic Church officiating. Interment will take place at Door Village Cemetery. A reception is to take place at the funeral home after the burial.
