Harold Olson

Harold Eugene Olson March 19, 1934-July 1, 2016 Harold Eugene Olson, age 82, passed away peacefully in his home, surrounded by his family on Friday, July 1, 2016, after a long battle with cancer. Harold was born on March 19, 1934 in LaPorte, IN to the late Carl and E. Elizabeth Olson (Rameier). On September 8, 1956 he married Ruby Blad, his beloved wife of 59 years with whom he fathered 3 loving children: Darrell (Pam) Olson, Janice (Martin) Orlowski and Linda (David) Pradziad, who survive. Preceding Harold in death, and eagerly awaiting his arrival in heaven, are his parents and siblings Eunice Cyganek. Alberta (Richard) Fulper, Carl Olson, Jr. and Ronald Olson. Harold was raised by two loving Christian parents. He married his high school sweetheart and the love of his life, Ruby Blad. He served in the army before settling down in Rolling Prairie as a dairy farmer. He loved working the land and he and Ruby worked hard to provide a good life for their family. Harold was a blessing to all who knew him. He was known by many for his sense of humor and his talent for finding the perfect joke that he could share to make everyone laugh. Harold had a competitive spirit; in high school he excelled in basketball and baseball. He went on to pitch for the LaPorte Sportmen's Northern IN baseball league and played for the Allis Chalmers basketball team. During his army years, Harold played for the 5th AA regional command at Ft. Sheridan, Il. Later in life, his passion was playing games: pinochle and up and down the river were his favorite card games. He also excelled at marbles, dominos, and euchre. It was rare when he didn't have a winning streak. Harold was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Wills Township Farm Bureau and Rolling Prairie Gleaners. Harold was a beautiful person inside and out. Everyone who knew him, loved him. The world was a better place with him in it. He was a loving son, a faithful partner, a reliable brother, a devoted father and a true friend to many. Harold lived 82 beautiful years and has now moved on to walk with Jesus and the loved ones who went before him. Visitation will be held from 6-8 pm CST (7-9 pm EST) on Tuesday, 7/5/16 and from 9-10 am CST Wednesday, 7/6/16 at Haverstock Funeral Home, 602 Maple Ave, LaPorte, IN. We will celebrate Harold's life at 10 am CST (11 am EST) on Wednesday, 7/6/16 at Haverstock Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Oak Grove Cemetery immediately following the service. The LaPorte American Legion - V.F.W. Honor Guard will conduct Military Honors at the cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to Trinity Lutheran Church, LaPorte, IN.
