The funeral for Mrs. Gladys M. Major, 95, of 1900 I St., LaPorte, will be Monday at 11 a.m. at Haverstock Funeral Home, LaPorte, with Rev. David Hill officiating. She died Thursday, April 29, 2004, at 9:45 p.m. at Fountainview Terrace Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, La-Porte. Friends may call Monday from 9 a.m. until the service. Burial will be in Pine Lake Cemetery, LaPorte. Memorial contributions may be made to Alzheimer?s Association, Northern Indiana Chapter, 108 N. Main St., Suite 707, South Bend, IN 46601. She was born Jan. 18, 1909, in Pike County, Ill., to Charles and Margaret Henthorn Cochran. She was a long-time resident of Michigan City and returned to the LaPorte area in 1998 after spending 18 years in Cedartown, Ga. Mrs. Major retired in 1975 as a salesperson from Ohmings Department Store after 10 years. She was a member of Springville Free Methodist Church and enjoyed gardening, working outdoors on the farm and walking. Surviving are one daughter, Joyce Wittchen of LaPorte; one son, Stephen Phylis of Waleska, GA.; four grandchildren, Orville Wittchen, Debra Chamberlan, Monte Major and Lindsay Major Perry; two great-grandchildren; one sister, Vera Kill of Liberty, Ill., and one brother, William Cochran of Atchison, Kan.
