Garrett Mandeville, passed away on April 10, 2025, at Trail Creek Place in Michigan City, Indiana. Born on July 13, 1941, in La Porte, Indiana, Garrett lived a life full of creativity, service, and camaraderie.
As an Army veteran, Garrett honorably served his country during the Vietnam War, displaying a commitment to duty that he carried with him throughout his life. His dedication to community service was further exemplified by his ownership and operation of Mr. "G's" barbershop in South Bend, where he made lasting connections with numerous customers over the years.
Garrett was not only a skilled barber but also a prolific writer, having penned over 500 stories that showcased his unique perspective and imaginative spirit. His craftsmanship extended to woodworking; he was known for his ability to create intricate cutouts of toy soldiers, Disney characters, and spider webs using his special saw. He also held a cherished collection of blueprints for various buildings and enjoyed a coin collection with his father that he donated to the New Day Foundation with the Door Village Church, underscoring his generous nature.
A man of simple pleasures, he found joy in walking at Kesling Park, where he could connect with nature and enjoy the serenity of his surroundings. Garrett’s passions reflected his warmth and creativity, traits that endeared him to many.
He is survived by his brother, Edwin (Helen) Mandeville; his cousins, Linda (Ed) Gourley and Dick (Joyce) Markanka; and two great-nieces as well as many other cousins. Additionally, Garrett leaves behind close friends Diana and Mark Riley, who shared in both his joys and his passions.
Garrett was preceded in death by his parents, Homer and Margaret Mandeville, and his sister, Sally Mandeville. His memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew him, celebrated by family, friends, and the many lives he touched throughout his journey.
Arrangements are being entrusted to Haverstock Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 602 Maple Ave., LaPorte, IN. A graveside service will be held on April 14, 2025, at 2:00 PM at Pine Lake Cemetery in La Porte, Indiana, providing an opportunity for loved ones to gather and honor Garrett’s life and contributions. He will be remembered not only for his artistic talents and service to the community but also for the kindness and spirit he shared with everyone around him. Military honors are to be presented.
