Fred Elkins

Fred W. Elkins September 10, 1924-August 14, 2018 Fred W. Elkins, 93, of Kingsford Heights, Indiana, passed away Tuesday, August 14, 2018 at his home in Kingsford Heights, Indiana. He was born September 10, 1924 in Lincoln County, Kentucky, the son of Gail Elkins and Sara (Harris) Elkins. Fred retired in 1986 after 26 years as a boiler operator at Westville Correctional Facility. He served in the United States Army from 1944-1946, serving in World War II. Fred was a disabled veteran due to grenade shrapnel while in Trier, Germany. He was a member of the Kingsford Heights Wesleyan Church since 1955, the Disabled American Veterans, Kingsford Heights American Legion Post 434. Fred enjoyed hunting, fishing, woodworking, gardening, and doing yard work. He also served as a Boy Scout leader for twenty years, helping eight boys obtain level of Eagle Scout. On November 2, 1948, in Coventington, KY, he married Marilyn Yaden Elkins who preceded in death January 6, 1994. He is survived by his daughter, Linda Wright of Kingsford Heights, IN; two sons, Zane (Marsha) Elkins of Kingsbury, IN, Perry (Sherry) Elkins of FL; ten-grandchildren; fifteen great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; brother, James Elkins of Lacrosse, IN; sister, Elizabeth Todd of Bloomfield, IN. Fred was preceded in death by both his parents; five brothers, Virgle Elkins, Clarence Elkins, Henry Elkins, Benjamin Elkins, Paul Ralf; six sisters, Nannie Pitman, Mollie Green, Edna Shoemaker, Della Beck, Elsie Elkins, Effie Elkins. Arrangements are being entrusted to Haverstock Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 602 Maple Ave., La Porte, Indiana. The family will receive friends Friday, August 17, 2018, from 4:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home and Saturday, August 18, 2018, from 12:00 p.m.-1:00 p.m. at the Kingsford Heights Wesleyan Church, 465 Evanston Rd, Kingsford Heights, Indiana 46346. A life celebration will be held at Kingsford Heights Wesleyan Church, Saturday August 18, 2018 at 1:00 p.m. with Pastor Jere Gowin officiating. Interment will follow at the Union Mills Cemetery, Union Mills, Indiana. Full military honors will be conducted at the cemetery.
