A private family service and entombment will be held for Mrs. Fern H. Porter, 93, of LaPorte, with Rev. Douglas Hadley officiating. She died Saturday, July 31, 2004, at 8 a.m. at her home. There will be no visitation. Burial will be in Swan Lake Memorial Gardens, Michigan City. Memorial contributions may be made to First United Methodist Church Music Fund, 1225 Michigan Ave., LaPorte, IN 46350; American Red Cross, LaPorte County Chapter, 113 Warren Rd., Michigan City, IN 46360; LaPorte Hospital Foundation, PO Box 250, LaPorte, IN 46350; or to the charity of the donor?s choice. She was born Aug. 29, 1910, in Union Mills to Cedric E. and Madge F. Hockney Kemp, and had lived all her life in the LaPorte area. Mrs. Porter was a homemaker. She was a member of First United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday school for 52 years, and LaPorte Chapter Order of the Eastern Star, and was a 75-year member of the American Red Cross. She was a volunteer for La-Porte Hospital and many other local organizations. On Feb. 4, 1933, in LaPorte, she married Merlin A. Porter, who died July 27, 1987. Also preceding her in death were her parents and one sister.
