Evelyn Nordyke

Miss Evelyn E. Nordyke, 102, passed to her heavenly home at 2:20 AM Tuesday, May 1, 2007 in her home at Brentwood. She died as she had lived with grace and dignity. Evelyn was born March 6, 1905 in LaPorte Co. to the late Charles C. Nordyke and the late Olive Buchanan Nordyke. She lived all of her life in the LaPorte area. Evelyn graduated from LaPorte High School and then attended business college. From 1925 to 1958 she was manager and buyer for McLane?s Apparel Shop in LaPorte. She had worked at the LaPorte License Branch and retired from the First National Bank of LaPorte. After retirement Evelyn was the assistant curator at the LaPorte County Museum and was instrumental in the move from the courthouse basement to the county complex. She was also a member of the Historical Society, D.A.R., LaPorte Chapter #280 Order of the Eastern Star, LaPorte Business Girls, and volunteered at the LaPorte Hospital and the American Red Cross. She was very proud of her family?s history which included being related to our 16th President, Abraham Lincoln. Evelyn visited the capitols of all 50 states then traveled extensively all over the world. Her philosophy of life was to stay active, keep your mind busy, and travel so that in later years those memories will sustain you. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She is preceded in death by her parents, One Sister Miss Gladys O. Nordyke; One Brother Mr. C. Elden Nordyke and One Nephew Mr. Thomas R. Nordyke.
