David-Lee Slater

David-Lee Slater January 9, 1935-October 18, 2017 David-Lee Slater, 82, of La Porte, Indiana, passed away Wednesday, October 18, 2017 at Indiana University Health La Porte Hospital in La Porte. He was born January 9, 1935 in La Porte, Indiana, the son of Victor Slater and Charlotte (Lilly) Slater. David retired in 1994 after 33 years as a school teacher in the La Porte Community School system. He served in the United States Army. He was a former member of the Eastern Star, LaPorte Masons, Shriner's, and a Scottish Rite. He enjoyed woodworking and volunteered a lot of his time at Pioneerland at the La Porte County fairgrounds as the Head School Master and was the coordinator for the school tours. He coached Little League Baseball, Babe Ruth Baseball, was in charge of the Presidential Fitness Award, David was very involved with lots of extra curricular activities with children in the school system. On August 16, 1958, in LaPorte, IN, he married Nancy Darling Slater who survives. He is also survived by his two daughters, Sherry (Steve Mann) Henry of La Porte, IN, Kandi (Keith) Tague of La Porte, IN; five grandchildren, Michael Hagenow, Jennifer Pekofske, Tara-Renee Hagenow, Rebecca Henry, Kristina Marie Tague; six great grandchildren; brother, Daniel Slater of La Porte, IN; niece, Michele Orndorff of Terre Haute, IN. David was preceded in death by his parents, and infant brother, "Nookie". Arrangements are being entrusted to Haverstock Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 602 Maple Ave., LaPorte, IN where the family will receive friends Sunday, October 22, 2017, from 2:00 pm - 5:00 pm and Monday, October 23, 2017, from 9:30 am, until the time of service. A life celebration will be held at Haverstock Funeral Home, Inc., Monday October 23, 2017 at 10:30 am with Pastor Lynn Rucker Breeden, officiating.
