Mr. Clarence E. Starkweather, 82, of 3304 Monroe St., LaPorte, and formerly of 211 Oberreich St., LaPorte, died Wednesday October 13, 2004, at 5:45 p.m. at Countryside Place Nursing Home, LaPorte. He was born April 13, 1922, in Mishawaka, IN., to Walter and Lois Sickafoose Starkweather, and has lived in the LaPorte area since 1957 coming from South Bend, IN. Mr. Starkweather retired in 1983 from the maintenance department of Berkel Corp. after 25 years of service. Prior to his work at Berkel he had worked for the Bendix Corp. for a number of years. He was a member of the First Christian Church of LaPorte, Masonic Lodge #41 F&AM, Veteran of the US Army during WW II where he served in the European, African, and Middle Eastern Theaters and had received 5 Bronze Stars, Past Commander of VFW Post #1130 of LaPorte, American Legion Post #297 of New Carlisle, IN., He taught Sunday School and was Youth Group Director at Indiana Ave. Christian Church of South Bend, IN., and he coached basketball at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church of LaPorte. On February 7, 1943 in Macon, Georgia, he married Minnie J. Rehlander, who preceded in death on April 20, 2003. Also preceding her in death were his parents, his wife, five brothers and three sisters. Surviving are many nieces and nephews. The funeral will be Saturday at 1:00 p.m. at Haverstock Funeral Home, LaPorte, with Rev. Rick Abbott officiating. Friends may call Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. until the service. Burial will be in Rolling Prairie Cemetery, Rolling Prairie, IN. the LaPorte VFW Post and the LaPorte American Legion will conduct a Military Service at the cemetery.
