Carol Ann Griggs

October 6, 1944-May 28, 2024

Carol Griggs, a beloved Christian woman, passed away on Tuesday, May 28, 2024 at Memorial Hospital South Bend.

She was known for her love of decorating Christmas ornaments, her fondness for western movies - particularly those featuring John Wayne, and her skills in the kitchen where she prepared the most delicious fried chicken and chicken and dumplings.

Born on October 6, 1944, in Greencastle, IN to Ernest and Margaret Barger, Carol lived a life full of kindness and generosity. She had a reputation for rescuing stray cats and dogs, earning her the endearing nickname of the "Cat Lady". Carol had a passion for big cars and was not shy about having a lead foot. In her leisure time, she enjoyed walking on the beach and following NASCAR races, with Jeff Gordon being her favorite driver.

Carol is survived by her children, Carol (Thomas) Lenker, Deanna (Charles) Lane, Angela (Edward) Coad, as well as a large extended family including grandchildren Daniel (Sara) Payne, Jessica, Kimberly (Greg), Elizabeth (Alex), Brittany, William, Edward, Craig, Lola, Rafael, Jennifer, Sarah, Russell Jr., Jaime, Crystal and David along with several great-grandchildren. She will be missed by many family members, close friends, and neighbors who helped her over the years.

Carol is preceded in death by her 1st husband Lanville Payne, 2nd husband Charles Griggs, her parents Ernest and Margaret Barger, son Russell Payne, daughters Donna Watts and Rachel Jimenez, brother Wesley Barger, and a grandchild Christina.

Carol's legacy of love and compassion will forever live on in the hearts of all those who were fortunate enough to know her. She will be dearly missed but never forgotten. May she rest in eternal peace.
