Betty J. Wood 73, of 1313 Woodward St. LaPorte, IN, passed away, February 22, 2005 in LaPorte Hospital, LaPorte, IN. She was born February 3, 1932 in Toto, IN to Ernest Salyer and Mertie Salyer Salyer, who have preceded. Married on June 25, 1950 in Hamlet, Indiana to Walter Raymond Wood, who preceded, July 2, 1990. Betty is survived by her five children: Janet Jim Kostielney of Michigan City, IN; Charles Wood of LaPorte, IN; Randi Larry Fulham of Cincinnati, OH; Barbara John Burleson of Grovertown, IN.; and Larry April Wood of Westville, IN.. Betty leaves 16 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Ruth Wieland of Indianapolis, IN., and Geneva Hugh Osborn of Townsend, TN.; sisters-in-law Liz Salyer of Yuba City, CA., Martha Lambert of North Liberty, IN., Dorothy Jack Renfro of LaPorte, IN., Nancy Wood of LaPorte, IN., and Frona Day of LaPorte, IN., Ellie Wood of Tucson, AZ. Thirty-Three Nieces and Nephews and many treasured friends. Betty was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brothers; Burl Salyer, Earl Salyer, Fred Salyer, and Donald Salyer. Betty?s long work career began at the Kingsbury Ordinance Plant in the early 1950?s and concluded with her retirement from Aero Metals in LaPorte, just four years ago. She was a dedicated and skilled employee who epitomized work ethic; when others could?nt or would?nt do a job. Betty successfully completed the task. Throughout her life, children were her joy. Hundreds remember her from Boardman?s Grocery and Tibma?s Bakery Store in LaPorte. Her children?s childhood friends visited Betty for decades after the kids left home and most called her Mom. Betty?s greatest happiness was found during family gatherings where the storytelling was passed from generation to generation. She was a member of the Maple City Church of LaPorte, IN. She loved music, books, movies & holidays and she taught herself how to use the computer and email after her retirement. Her laughter, sincerity and generosity will be long remembered. The funeral will be 10:30 AM Saturday, February 26, 2005 at Haverstock Funeral Home with Rev. Tom Hickey, officiating. Visitation will be from 4:00 PM ? 8:00 PM Friday, February 25, 2005 at Haverstock Funeral Home and from 9:00 AM Saturday, until time of service. Burial will be in the Patton Cemetery in LaPorte, IN. The services are followed by dinner at the Knights of Columbus, 412 Lincolnway, LaPorte, IN. Memorials may be made to the American Lung Association or the Foundation For A Smokefree America.
