Betty Smith

Betty Lou Smith September 20, 1923-July 24, 2017 Betty Lou Smith, 93, of La Porte, Indiana, passed away Monday July 24, 2017 at Miller's Health and Rehab in La Porte, IN. She was born September 20, 1923 in Chicago, Illinois, the daughter of George Joseph Melvin and Olive Mae (Gawthrop) Melvin. Betty was a member of the DAV Post #6 of South Bend, IN. and the VFW of Rolling Prairie, a former member of the New Carlisle Legion Auxiliary and was a Cub Scout Leader. Betty was a homemaker and had also worked at the New Carlisle Post Office and at Robertson's Dept. Store in South Bend wrapping presents during Christmas time. Betty was an avid euchre player. On August 4, 1941, in Bryan, Ohio, she married Robert R. Smith who preceded her in death March 29, 1990. She is survived by her three sons, Robert R. (Gloria) Smith of Tomball, TX, James A. Smith of La Porte, IN, John T. (Mary) Smith of Rolling Prairie, IN; six grandchildren, Shelly Smith, Tom (Stephanie) Smith, James Smith, Jeff Smith, Debra (Christopher) Varnak, John (Laura) Smith, Jr.; thirteen great grandchildren; three great great grandchildren. Betty was preceded in death by her parents, husband, son, Richard A. Smith, and one great grandson. Arrangements are being entrusted to Haverstock Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 602 Maple Ave., La Porte, IN where the family will receive friends Thursday, July 27, 2017, from 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm and Friday, July 28, 2017, from 10:00 am - 11:00 am. A life celebration will be held at Haverstock Funeral Home, Inc., Friday July 28, 2017 at 11:00 am with Rev. John Marron officiating.
