Mr. Barry C. Rutherford, age 58, of La Porte, Ind., died 10:30 AM Saturday, November 24, 2007, at his home in La Porte, Ind. He was born July 28, 1949 in Lebanon, Ind. to the late Donald Rutherford and Ida Corrine Putnam Rutherford. Barry was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Association of United States Army, FBI National Academy Assoc., San Pierre Lions Club, and North Judson American Legion. He was Junior High Football Coach and High School Football and Track Coach for North Judson-San Pierre Schools. Barry joined the Indiana State Police in January, 1972, and retired January, 2007. He was promoted from Trooper to Detective Sergeant in 1978 and to Lieutenant in 2001. He graduated from the FBI National Academy in 1981. Civilian awards include the Emergency Response Team Leader Medal, Distinguished Pistol Medal, Combat Top 5 Medals and Governors Top Twenty Award. Barry enlisted in the U.S. Army Reserve in May, 1968 and retired April, 2007, attaining the rank of Command Sergeants Major. He served at company, battalion, brigade, and theater levels. He served active duty during Desert Storm/Desert Shield. He retired as Operations Sergeant with U.S. Army Japan/9th Theater Support Command. Barry graduated from the U.S. Army Sergeants Major Academy in 1989; graduated 4th U.S. Army Air Assault School in 1991; Team Captain and Marksmanship Coordinator of the 4th U.S. Army Pistol Team. Barry had received the following decorations: Meritorious Service Medal w/3rd oak leaf cluster, Army Commendation Medal w/1st oak leaf cluster, Army Achievement Medal, Army Reserve Components Achievement Medal w/7th oak leaf cluster, National Defense Medal w/Bronze Star, Air Assault Badge, USA Distinguished Pistol Shot Badge, Excellence in Competition Rifle Badge, Silver German Military Sportsman Performance Badge, Armed Forces Reserve Medal w/M Device, NCO Professional Development Ribbon, LaPorte County Patriotic Service Medal. On Sept. 11, 1982 in Michigan City, Ind. he married Bonnie Loetz who survives. Barry is also survived by his Daughter, Mrs. Teri Matt Montemurro of Cincinnati, Ohio; Son, Mr. Tony Sherri Rutherford of Cincinnati, Ohio; Mother, Mrs. Ida Corrine Rutherford of Greenwood, Ind.; Five grandchildren, Adam Degeneffe, Madison Montemurro, Domenic Montemurro, Barry Rutherford, Anthony Montemurro; Two Sisters, Mrs. Carol Shives of Indianapolis, Ind., Mrs. Barbara Lambert of Greenwood, Ind.; Three Brothers, Mr. Bob Rutherford of Lafayette, Ind., Mr. Donnie Rutherford of Festus, Mo., and Mr. Brian Rutherford of Lebanon, Ind. Barry is preceded in death by his Father Donald Rutherford and One Sister Marcia Betterton. Arrangements are being handled by Haverstock Funeral Home, Inc., 602 Maple Ave., LaPorte, Ind., where the family will receive friends from 2:00 PM to 8:00 PM Wednesday, November 28, 2007 and from 8:00 to 9:45 AM Thursday. Funeral service will be at Sacred Heart Catholic Church at 10:00 AM Thursday, November 29, 2007, Rev. Ian Williams officiating. A Wake service will be held 7:00 PM Wed. at the funeral home.
