Allen R. Garner, 87, of Hanna, Indiana, passed away Monday, March 1, 2021 at home, surrounded by his family.
He was born October 15, 1933 in La Porte, Indiana, the son of Donald and Ellen (Frankfother) Garner. On July 2, 1954 in Angola, IN, he married Thelma Ragan, who preceded him in death. Allen served in the United States Army from 1954-1956 and worked as a maintenance engineer for Golden Living, retiring in 2017 after almost 50 years. A resident of the area since 1962, moving from Jerry City, OH, he was a member of the Hanna United Methodist Church. Allen was a Gideon for 30 years, a Lion's Club member, a Hanna volunteer fireman, a South County Arbor of the Gleaner Life Insurance Society and a member of the board at Hanna Cemetery. He enjoyed gardening and taking care of his lawn, having "the best yard in town". And he had an affinity for feeding and watching his birds, always keeping a steady supply of food on hand.
Allen is survived by his son, Kevin (Shawna) Garner of Hanna, IN; daughter, Brenda (Richard) Bolakowski of Union MIlls, IN; brother, Bill (Babe) Garner of Hanna, IN; sister, Sharon (Bill) Warner of Florida; sister-in-law, Mary Garner of Findley, OH; grandchildren, Josh(Dru) Bolakowski, Rebekah Garner, Kendra Lay, Amy(Laura) Bolakowski, Ethan Garner; great-grandchildren, Issac, Naomi, Kiara, Anigha, River, Steven, Jenlee, Neveha, Ivy, and Theo.
Along with his wife, Thelma, Allen was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Merle (Mary) Garner; brother, Raymond Garner; sister, Vera(Charles) Elbe.
Arrangements are being entrusted to Haverstock Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 602 Maple Ave., La Porte, IN. All services will be held at Hanna United Methodist Church, 101 W. Hopper St, Hanna IN 46340, Saturday, March 6, 2021, with visitation from 10 a.m. until noon and funeral service at noon. Pastor Jim Denton and Chaplain Joe Mollet of Dunes Hospice, will officiate. Interment will follow at Hanna Cemetery. Anyone attending these ceremonies is required to wear masks and practice social distancing as mandated by Indiana executive order.
