Mr. Alex George Burkus , 80, of Rolling Prairie, Indiana, died Thursday April 29, 2010 at Golden Living Center Fountainview in LaPorte. He was born November 12, 1929 in South Bend, Indiana, the son of Alex Burkus and Dorothy Ray Burkus. Alex lived in the LaPorte area, most of his life. Alex worked for Sara Lee Bakery for twenty years, retiring in 1994. He was a member of United Methodist Church of Rolling Prairie, Rolling Prairie Masonic Lodge #291, Scottish Rite of South Bend, Orak Shrine, LaPorte American Legion Post #83 and Farm Bureau. He enjoyed being with his family and teaching his grandchildren. Alex enjoyed golf and all sports. "He was a very honest and loyal man". His "Punk" was the love of his life. The family would like to thank the nursing staff of the Golden Living Center Fountainview and the staff on the 4th floor at LaPorte Hospital, for their special care. On June 4, 1951, in Lawton, OK, he married Doris H. Holdeman Burkus who survives. He is also survived by his son David Burkus of Hampton, VA; daughter, Karen David Frazier of La Porte, IN; five grandchildren, Gregory M. Alberding, Nicole Burkus, Bryan Burkus, Karley Kinsey, Kate Burkus and one brother William Leona Burkus of South Bend, IN. Alex was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters, Frances Smith, Doris Toth, Betty Rajski, and two brothers, Elmore Burkus, James Burkus. Arrangements are being handled by Haverstock Funeral Home, 602 Maple Ave., LaPorte, IN, where the family will receive friends Saturday, May 01, 2010 from 2:00 pm, until time of service. A memorial service will be held at Haverstock Funeral Home, Inc., Saturday May 1, 2010 at 4:00 PM with Rev. Dorothy Jones officiating. Cremation will take place.
